Suspect Interview
Suspect tells us he is a “flesh wearing psycho who carves basslines
with a chainsaw. Who was born with a flesh eating disease and gets revenge by
killing people with dubstep, or something similar” Ok so he lied on that
one...but Suspect is actually a talented dubstep producer with no flesh eating
diseases but does kill people with dubstep. Suspect is also owner of PrimeAudio Records. We talked about himself, dubstep and Prime Audio Records.! Check it out!
Tell us a bit about
yourself
I live in inbreedville also known as Dover, Kent. I have a
fear of goats and foxes and recently badgers. I produce under the names of
suspect/suspicious stench and I run a label called prime audio, also started
doing promo under loud noise promotions.
Oh and I am the original suspect
Why the name Suspect?
Originally I wanted to make grime or hip hop beats so I
called myself grime suspect then dubstep caught my ear so I went straight for
that, lost the grime now I’m plain old suspect.
When did you first
hear dubstep and producing dubstep?
I think the first time I heard dubstep was in 06 I think Stenchman
showed me a Skream tune and I was instantly hooked, stench was making DnB at
the time, I was massively into hip hop, I got a copy of reason and tried to
make hip hop beats, didn’t really get anywhere with it except learning how to
use reason, by that time stench was onto making dubstep and by 07 I knew how to
use reason and we made putrid creature under the name Suspicious Stench and
that’s where it all started for me.
What equipment do you
use to produce?
Monitors Yamaha hs80m, external sound card tapco fire wire
4x6 and a M-audio Axiom 49 keyboard which I don’t use enough to be honest. The
software I use is reason just waiting for reason 6, think I need to rewire
reason to progress now, but I’m just far too lazy.
Tell us a bit about
“Prime Audio” Records and the family behind it?
Prime audio is a label I run myself, I like to concentrate
on sick producers who are either new to the scene or just under the radar. It’s
been a bit quiet for prime audio lately but got loads in the pipeline so keep
your ears peeled!!
Any new releases
you’d like to tell us about?
Next release for me is on MRK1’s label contagious includes:
suspicious stench – Mince meat / suspicious stench – imagination exaggeration /
grave robber – monster (suspect remix)
Loads of unsigned bits I just haven’t looked for homes for
yet
Next release on Prime audio is a 4 track EP by KLRGRM
(lonestar) big producer fellow reason user expect a colab soon.
Where can everyone
find your music?
Any last words?
Dubstep is alive and well and if it died you wouldn’t
survive the smell!

Ωhmtrix Interview
Today I had an interview with Ωhmtrix real name Sam Wheeler,
from London. He has always been around music from a young age and that is
reflected in his music. Still learning but growing rapidly Ωhmtrix is a name to
watch out for! I caught up with him to talk about his collaboration with Dubfreq,
himself and dubstep.
Enjoy the interview because I sure did!
Enjoy the interview because I sure did!
Check out the new track by Ωhmtrix and Dubfreq!
Ωhmtrix Interview
Tell us a bit about yourself (etc. name, age)
My name is Sam Wheeler, I am 24 years old and I make bass
related music such as Drum and bass, Dubstep, Breakbeat and Glitch hop. I’ve
played drums since I was about 5 years old and guitar since about 10! I’ve played
in several bands over the years. Grunge bands, blues bands, rock and roll
bands, metal bands...allsorts!
What made you choose the name Ohmtrix?
I’ve had alot of names and never really liked any of them
because they weren’t unique...i wanted something that nobody else had and
sounded cool and had some sort of meaning. I can’t really remember exactly how
it came about but I just like the sound of it. I invented my own word! An ohm
is a measure of resistance and trix is...well...tricks...
When did you start producing and what inspired you?
I started mucking about with reason a long time
ago...probably about 6 years when I first went raving. I went to a weekly drum
and bass rave when I was 18 called 'Movement ' in London which was run by Jordan
V and featured wicked DnB DJ’s every week.
The first night I remember Ray Keith was playing and on his way out
through the crowd he spudded my hand...that made my night!! :P about 4 years
ago I decided to learn how to produce properly so I enrolled at CM in Whitechapel
on the advice of Inchie from pyramid. Some wicked people learnt here such as
Skism and Pyramid. Nick from the prototypes was one of my classmates. I learnt
a hell of a lot from that place!
I also got fed up of relying on unreliable people in band
situations...
When did you first hear dubstep?
Wow that’s a good question...I remember not really being
into it at first. I decided to make some of my own eventually but with more of
my own twist, I was making breakbeat mostly at the time so we were calling it
"breakstep"
What does your studio setup consist of?
I use a Mac pro and logic 8. I use alot of software plug in’s
by waves...some stuff by sonalksis. Eerm...camelphat is another regular on my
channel strips. Softsynth wise I use N.I massive alot, Rob papen stuff. Hardware
wise I have a pair of Adam a8x monitors, an access Virus Ti2 desktop, an art
tps2 tube preamp, an emu esi2000 sampler, a neumann tlm-103 condenser mic and
my audio interface is a focusrite saffire pro 40!
What does your live setup consist of?
At the moment it consists of 2 or 3 CDJ’s. I used to use
vinyl but CD’s are just so much easier! There is a slight sacrifice when it
comes to sound quality but for me, being able to download tunes and burn them
to CD makes life a hell of a lot easier!
One day I would like to get a proper live act together with
synth players and a live drummer!
Who have you been able to learn from over the years?
Skism has to be one of my biggest influences. I had one on
one mentoring sessions with him that was arranged by my uni. He really shed
some light on how to get my tunes sounding much better! Inchie from pyramid has
taught me alot over the years as well. It’s thanks to him that I went to CM and
learnt how to produce properly!
You recently collaborated with “Dubfreq” on your track
“Incurable”, do you have any more collaboration’s in process or soon to be
released?
Yes! I have a collaboration with a drum and bass producer
called Kroak which is turning out to be seriously heavy! I will be
collaborating with another Dnb producer called Resistance very soon! Got a
loooad more stuff on the way from me and Dubfreq and I’ve got a glitch hop
collaboration with son of a glitch in the pipes also.
Got a few others to sort out as well but a bit early to say
yet ;)
What’s your opinion on dubstep becoming main-stream?
It’s cool! I’d rather listen to Nero on the radio than LMFAO
any day! There are so many different sub genres of dubstep these days that some
of it is bound to appeal to the vast masses! I’m not sure if the kind of
dubstep I make will ever get mainstream though...it’s a bit "smack you in
the face" for most people, but that’s how I like it!
What does “Ohmtrix” do in his spare time?
I’ve got a 4 and a half month old son called Alfie so spare
time is pretty hard to come by! I make music as much as I can but spend the
majority of my time with the girlfriend Holly looking after the little one.
Where can everyone find you and your music?
You can find my music here : www.soundcloud.com/ohmtrix
I’m on twitter @ohmtrix and search ohmtrix on Facebook to
like my fan page!
My website www.ohmtrix.com is currently under construction!
Any last words?
Yeah thank you for the interview! And the bloggage! Go buy
my tunes everyone! Thanks to everyone that’s supported me so far!
Peace!
Peace!

Dubsik Interview
I recently had an interview with a producer from The Nertherlands by the name of "Dubsik". He has released mixes on soundcloud and there is a lot to look forward to in the future. Catch him on the AccessFM Radio show (Info Below). I quizzed him about the AccessFm Radio show, Mixes and all other things dubstep. Enjoy!
Tell us a bit
about yourself?
Dubsik’s the name; I’m a 20 year old dubstep DJ / Promoter from The Netherlands. I’m the owner of Elephant Music, together with Lounger and Jay Rakka we organise parties in the south-west region of The Netherlands.
Dubsik’s the name; I’m a 20 year old dubstep DJ / Promoter from The Netherlands. I’m the owner of Elephant Music, together with Lounger and Jay Rakka we organise parties in the south-west region of The Netherlands.
In the summer of 2008 I remember I was at a mate’s place. He told me about this music called dubstep. At the time I was a die-hard metal fanatic (although I still am, but my focus is more on dubstep now as far as listening to music) so I was like: “It better be good and not some poppy shit!”. I don’t remember the exact track he made me listen to, but I can remember the same day he made me listen to “Crissy Criss – Kick Snare” and I was blown away.
To be honest, I haven’t finished a tune.. just a lot of work in progress. But I can definitely tell you which producers inspire my as far as their sounds.
Well, I started mixing with Virtual DJ with just my mouse and keyboard. Was pretty fun, shortly after mixing this way I released a couple of mixes for fun and passed them around my friends.
After a while I got bored with Virtual DJ, I wanted to learn how to play tunes properly. In my neighbourhood there is a community centre where they have 2x CDJ-1000 players and a standard Pioneer mixer. I burned a couple of discs with tunes and I burned them in a way that I could exactly play mixes that had already done on Virtual DJ.
A second party followed but after that I didn’t have any bookings so I started e-mailing club and such, but none of these e-mailed me back. I got bored of this so I thought: “You know what, **** y’all, I’m going to do it myself!” I started organising a couple of small parties with Lounger and Jay Rakka, but it soon became pretty big and now I’m where I am today pretty much.
Elephant Music is an official company organising dubstep / drum n bass parties in my area. Until now we’ve had more than a handful of successful events and we’re still going strong!
The AccessFM Radio has just started, so we’re still trying to gain more listeners.
It’s better to grow slow but steady and build quality content!
For everyone that wants to tune-in and hear me play, I play every Thursday from 19:00 ‘till 21:00! (GMT)
Not really, when I make a mix it comes out naturally. I can learn a lot from the radio and live shows, in both ways I can figure out which tunes fit well together.
I use some musically theory for mixing harmonically and I also separate my tunes into different categories (for example, I use categories like:
-
Bangers
-
Deep / Minimal
-
Upbeat)
No, but keep an eye out at my Soundcloud as well as my
Facebook and Twitter to not miss a thing. In about two / three weeks I will
release a new mix, so to keep yourself updated:

The musical partnership that started between Alex Crawford and Paul Baker, AKA The Others, a number of years ago has proved to be an endlessly creative and fruitful one that has continued to herald exciting results both in the studio and in clubs. What started off as a one time collaboration between the pair brought to light a musical kinship that has been the driving force behind an impressive and substantial back catalogue of music and a hectic touring schedule that has seen them travel the world over. Fast forward to 2011 and having decided to part ways, Alex continues to take The Others forward as a solo project and has a whole host of exciting new projects in the pipeline which will emerge over the coming months.
After meeting as music production students, their shared love of garage and jungle brought about the musical alliance that has taken them to the top of the dubstep scene where The Others now reside. Following the evolution of garage into what was to become dubstep, it was after hearing seminal Digital Mystikz track ‘Anti-War Dub’ that they honed their focus in on the emerging sound, embarking upon a path that has led them to where they are today.
They received early support from revered DJs like N-Type, Joe Nice & Wonder who championed tracks ‘The Curse’, ‘Hear Dis Style’ (which was to become their debut release on Boka) and ‘Freakshow’, which was later picked up for release by seminal dubstep label Tempa. As momentum picked up off the back of this, it was thanks to the support of dubstep ambassador N-Type on his radio show that led to them being asked to join Caspa’s growing Dub Police stable, with whom they remain to this day. The organic development of this relationship has gone from strength to strength, with The Others becoming an integral part and the most released artist of the eclectic label.
It was after joining the Dub Police camp that Paul moved away from the production side of things and Alex took the reigns on the project. His first release for the label, ‘Africa’, garnered a lot of attention, becoming an anthem in the scene, and the VIP version of the track featured on Caspa and Rusko’s landmark FabricLive 37 compilation. A slew of towering releases followed both for Dub Police and an impressive array of other labels including Sub Soldiers, Wheel & Deal and heritage dubstep label Ringo Records. It hasn’t stopped at original productions either, as his growing reputation also led to remixes of Above & Beyond’s ‘Sun & Moon’, underground anthem ‘Hard’ by Breakage featuring Newham Generals and Pyramid’s ‘Trouble’.
Now in 2011 their is plenty in store for The Others with a number of exciting projects on the horizon. A release is planned for release on Dub Police this summer (First Flight EP), which will again showcase the continued evolving sound of his production. As well as collaborations with artists from the dubstep scene and beyond. Keep your ears peeled!
Any time when he isn’t in the studio, he can be found travelling across the globe igniting dancefloors. His prodigious skills have taken him to the world famous House of Blues in LA, Paradiso in Holland, Eden in Ibiza and countless dates at Fabric in London. With imminent headline tours of America and Australasia planned as well as slots at numerous festivals, it looks like he is set to have an extremely busy year!
The Others continues to innovate and push boundaries, proving his worth as amongst the most versatile and exciting producers around.

Breezer Interview
I recently had an
interview with an up and coming producer by the name of Breezer. I immediately became
hooked on his music after hearing his “Mr.Boob” track on soundcloud. Not to mention the tracks “Get Ready”, “Go Crazey” and “Panic Attack” will have you in a
frenzy. Be sure to keep an eye on Breezer in the future! Enjoy!
Tell us a bit about
yourself etc. (Name, age)
Well my name is Mike, I’m 20 years old and I was born and live in Cyprus.
What made you choose the name “Breezer”?
What made you choose the name “Breezer”?
I started producing and I wanted to have a name that people can easily
pronounce, a name that stands out and to be short with not many letters in it.
So I was thinking and the first name that popped in my head was Breezer. So I
thought why not and I immediately used it and made a Youtube account with it so
I could post my first track.
When did you first
hear dubstep?
It was 3-4 years ago from a friend’s mp3 player. I was listening to Fingathing
back in the day a lot and I always wanted to listen to something like Fingathing
but more aggressive and heavier. So I heard dnb on my friends mp3 player
actually and it was DJ Hazard and as I was looking for DJ Hazard tracks I came
across dubstep and I have been listening to dubstep ever since.
When did you start
producing? And what inspired you to produce?
I started producing 8 months ago January 2011. I was always listening to
dubstep and paying attention to how the producer was mixing the sounds he used
in a track so well. One day I thought, you know, I want to try and produce
dubstep. So that’s what I did.
What equipment do you
use to produce?
I use Reason 5 until I get Reason 6. I produce everything on there. At first
when I saw it I thought No Way. I
thought it would be so hard for me to learn it. But I didn’t give up and now it
is extremely easy for me. Sometimes I use Adobe Audition to edit vocals or some
sounds I export and fix them up a bit and change them. I use a midi keyboard,
M-Audio Oxygen49 which made my life so much easier and my M-Audio Torq Xponent
controller to edit my tracks, record them while making changes with it and I
chop the bits I like to use and import them in Reason and edit them again.
Who are some of your
favourite artist?
I really look up to Excision and Datsik they have most of my favourite tracks.
I also like Knife Party, Zomboy, Rusko, Doctor P, Diesel, Bar9, Noisia and many
more.
I have to ask, is
there any meaning behind the track “Mr Boob”? Or was it just a bit of fun?
Haha...Well...I made it purely for fun I guess but I believe it came out pretty
good at the end.
Have you played many
club gigs of late? How is your music received in the clubs?
If you really want to know, I only played once in my life at a club. The video
is on my Youtube Channel. There was a crew called Dirty Basslines in another
city and they were going to perform at a club as a crew and play dubstep just
for fun get more people to listen to dubstep, because here in Cyprus you will
not find many people that listen to dubstep. So it’s not easy for me to get my
music out there to the public or perform a lot or promote myself as much as I
want to. But these guys contacted me and asked me to perform at the club with
them and play my own songs only as a promotion. When I started playing everyone
was going crazy I enjoyed it so much.
Can we expect to see
“Breezer” on a record label anytime soon?
I’m hoping to get in a label soon if everything goes well with my music. But
even if I don’t, that doesn’t mean I will stop promoting my tracks or stop
producing. I will always produce because for me it’s a lifestyle now I do it every
day. I really want to go to the UK and perform.
Any new releases you
can tell us about?
I am currently working on 2 unreleased tracks and I am going to post a clip of
1 of them on my Soundcloud. My first ever track to go on Beatport is going to
be released by Rockforce Records on the 10th of October so that
means in a couple of days so I am really looking forward to that as well.
Any last words?
I want to say thank you for this interview it really means a lot to me and a
big thank you to all my supporters on Youtube, Soundcloud and Facebook who
leave me feedback and nice comments and show their support. I have big tracks
coming your way so you better watch out!
P.S: I will start
doing Live Webcam Shows in 1-2 weeks and people can watch directly from my Facebook
page. All of you will be able to comment and chat with me as I mix and I will
be replying back immediately. Thanks and see you all there!

Sparxy Interview
This week I had the opportunity to talk to a talented DnB/Dubstep producer
by the name of Sparxy. Sparxy is also the owner of "Bacon Dubs"
Records which is home to many other talented producers. We talked about the
family at Bacon Dubs, producing and his new album Exile/Relentless which is due
out on the 31st of October. Enjoy!
Firstly, tell us a bit about yourself etc. (Name, age)
Hello! My name's Matt Sparks, but you may know me as dubstep DJ and producer
Sparxy. I'm 25 and from Portsmouth in the UK. I'm also label owner at Bacon
Dubs Records.
Tell us about the family at Bacon Dub
Tell us about the family at Bacon Dub
At the moment Bacon Dubs is me, my buddy Radzta, Skriptah, Intelligent
Delinquent and Reamz. I feel we are all very versatile, with a mixture of
tastes that all cross over somewhere along the line. As a fan of the full
spectrum of bass music, I wanted to create a label that doesn't pigeon hole
itself to a particular sound. My ethos is just to put out quality music
covering the full spectrum of UK bass that hopefully all types of fans of
dubstep will enjoy. The artists I have on board I feel are extremely talented,
and I feel our diverse range of bass music is what will set us apart.
Is there any meaning behind the name Sparxy?
Well, my second name is Sparks and growing up I was nicknamed “Sparxy” by my mates. It's just something that has stuck over time really!

When did you first hear dubstep? Did it inspire you to
produce dubstep?
Originally I was into Drum n Bass, I still remember the day I picked up a copy of “The Nine” by Bad Company on wax when I was 15 years old! I was heavily into DnB and DJing at the time. As my interest expanded I got into production around 2006. I have been into dubstep ever since I first heard Skream's "Midnight Request Line" around 2008. It really caught me, I felt the entire emotion of the tune and just seemed to "get it" right away. I've been hooked ever since and my production / DJ focus switched from DnB to dubstep very quickly! What I love about dubstep is its versatility. There is an amazing array of styles and sounds for just one genre, and I am a fan of it all. The early stuff was all about raw vibes and emotion and you can really feel the artists' vibes in the music. I think this is still mostly the case today and whether you're looking to chill out and meditate, or go mental raving, dubstep can cater for it!

Which artists are your main influences?
Being a DnB head I am heavily influenced from the likes of Bad Company, DJ Fresh, Hive, early Pendulum, State of Mind, Moving Fusion, Concorde Dawn, Lynx... I could go on naming my favourite DnB producers forever! I have always been a fan of darker, moody music and DnB created a certain energy on the dancefloor.

In terms of dubstep, well I don't think any dubstep artist
can forget to mention Skream. The man is so versatile with the ability to
create a massive range of vibes in music and was instrumental in dubstep's
early days. Thesedays my taste is very eclectic; I am massively influenced by
deeper darker stuff like Truth, Distance and Tunnidge. 16Bit are amazing in my
book, Joker is an originator and a big influence in trying to keep my music
original. Kutz is another one of my favourite producers, the man is genius. I
can also appreciate the energy created by guys like Funtcase, Cookie Monsta and
Excision. I guess you could say I’m just generally a fan of bass music and
believe there's a time and place for almost any style!
I don't like pigeon holing myself to a particular sound, I try to stretch my interests as much as possible and hopefully this comes across in my productions as well.

What can we expect from your first release
Exile/Relentless?
For me music is all about emotion and how it makes you feel. I made Exile when
I was in a bit of a dark place and it really reflects how I felt at the time.
Relentless was made purely for the dancefloor and you can expect it to be a bit
more facemelting!
The release is out on Bacon Dubs on the 31st October,
available anywhere you can buy tunes online.
So what’s your studio like? Tell us a bit about the
equipment you use?
I have a home setup in a semi-treated room, a decent PC with Focusrite Saffire sound interface. I have it hooked up to Alesis M1 Mk2 Monitors which are getting on a bit now, they're not ideal, but I know them inside out. The important thing when it comes to monitors/speakers is to train your ears and understand how the sound coming out of them translates to other systems. I know some big producers who still use HiFi speakers!!
What about the equipment you use in your live shows?
I'm old school when it comes to playing out live. You can't beat a pair of Technics, I think it gets the DJ involved in the sets like nothing else can. With the digital revolution though I have now got Serato SL1 time code setup which I have been using at home and for my radio shows, it’s really cool, and blends all the advantages of mixing turntables with the versatility of digital music. I have yet to test this live yet, and tend to play it safe when DJing out and use the CDJs at gigs.
Where can everyone find your music?
I put new stuff on my Soundcloud every so often – http://soundcloud.com/Sparxy there are also a few free downloads on there and some mixes. Also keep locked to all your digital music stores – Exile and Relentless will be out 31st October and you can cop it from iTunes, Beatport, Juno or anywhere else you can buy tunes online!
